OCTOBER ALREADY??!!

Wow! I can''t believe it's October already! I have been very busy re-doing my oak floor in my bedroom and re-painting it for the last few weeks. I was camping out in the living room for almost 2 weeks. I have a door to re-stain and I'm all done.

This move to the upstairs for the computer room is really keeping me off the computer. It's like out of site, out of mind. I'm going to try to make it up here more often. I have to get back on track with my projects and see where I left off. With the bedroom done, I should have a couple weekends freed up in a row.

NEW PROJECT

Hello all,

It's been awhile since my last posting so I thought I'd show you the latest project I finished. I have been so busy with work and on top of that, we moved the computer room to the upstairs of my house and nothing has been the same. I'm so disorganized and feel out of place up here. Anyway, I made this intarsia of the tulips for a friend of mine for her birthday. I downloaded the pattern from Garnet Hall's website for free (you can also, just click on his link on the right).

I chose to hand paint this intarsia using the brush on wipe off method. I think it came out great considering I'm not much of a painter. Once I was done painting it, I assembled and then sprayed on a few coats of gloss. Hope you like this project and I will try not to wait so long to post.

DOLPHIN INLAY ROUND BOX

Hello everyone,

Today I have a nice little project for anyone that is intrested in inlay work. I got this pattern from my friend Steve Good at http://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.com/. Steve has many projects that you can download for free. If you haven't seen his site yet, you'll be very happy with the things you can download. Also, he has a video that goes along with this project at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjecP8KjjrU&feature=related. This is part one of a 2 part video. Once on the youtube site you'll find part 2.

I used white oak for the box and I used Paduk for the inlay. I like how that reddish color from the Paduk stands out in the white oak. I finished it with Tung oil and then sprayed it with a satin poly finish. This project only took a couple hours to do and it was fun.

RED WING LOGO

Hello,

Hope everyone had a nice weekend. I made this Red Wing scroll this week using one of those .50 cent frames I got from a garage sale. I just repainted it and I had my frame all set. I logo was cut out of 1/8" Red Oak and I stained it walnut for a nice rich look.

Being the Red Wings are the best team in hockey and since I'm from Hockey Town, I thought this would be a nice sports theme project. All in all, not bad.

GARAGE SALE FRAMES

Hello everyone,

The last couple weeks I've been working on making custom frames. Today I wanted to give you a nice little tip about getting cheap frames. Garage sales!! Sometimes you might get lucky and find some nice frames real cheap. What I noticed is that the person would be selling a picture with the frame. I take the picture out along with the glass and now I have a frame. I recently purchased 3 picture that had frames 3x5, 5x7 and 8x10 for $1.25. In the pictue is a 3x5 frame that I cut a piece of wood to fit and shrunk my pattern down to fit. For the price, I couldn't make them cheaper!!

TRIBAL LION

Hello all,

Well here is my latest creation, the tribal lion. I downloaded this picture from a tattoo site that I ran across. I like tribal art and I love lions so I thought this picture was fitting. Also, the frame was custom made by me. I spent some time in the shop trying to get this right and after a few attempts, I finally got good results. This is actually the third frame I made for this picture. The first one was scrapped because it was severely out of square. The second, I ended up cutting it too short for the picture. I guess the third time was the charm. I ended up making a miter sled for the table saw and that made everything easy. What I liked about making the frame was I finally can put all those router bits I have to good use. The possibilities are endless!!

SCROLL SAW VIDEOS

Hello all,
Tonight I added a couple of things to the blog for your enjoyment. First, I put on you tube videos of my favorite videos from some of the people that I think is very helpful in showing how they do their work. I can never say enough good things about Steve Good and his great video's. They say a picture is worth a thousand words and I always learn something from watching woodworking video's. I also added a drill size chart although I'm not too sure how helpful that will be, but nonetheless I put it on for awhile to see how it does. ROCK BAND PLAQUE

Hello all,

It's been awhile since my last post and I'm sorry. I have been working a lot of hours at my job lately and haven't had enough time in the workshop. The time I do get in the shop have been used up with my experimenting with building custom frames. I have built a miter sled for the table saw to help me make better miters. I did manage to get my first frame built with satisfactory results. I still have to practice more. I'm going to be painting the frame to go with the scroll art I had in mind for it and I'll be posting it soon.

I do have a plaque to show you that I made for my son. It's one of his favorite bands and he has it hanging on his wall. I did this project fairly quickly and I think it came out pretty good. If you notice, I used a carving tool to carve some texture to the piece. I thought it looked to plain and was missing something. That's what I love about woodworking, your only limited by your own imagination!!

Well, I will have some stuff up as soon as I can get some quality time in the shop. Till then I hope you have a great week ahead and talk to you soon.

FINISHED BIRD CAGE STAND

Hello all, hope your having a good night so far. As promised, I have the pictures of the bird cage stand I built totally finished with cage installed. I have to thank my friend Mike for the great paint job he done on it. He used a textured spray paint giving it an unique sand stone like finish. Everyone is happy with the results and it looks real nice. The scroll sawed parakeet on the door really makes this piece a one of a kind. I also have to give a thanks out to Joe Martinez for the parakeet pattern. I had to make some changes to the original pattern, I had to delete the branch and flowers so I could fit the pattern on the door. I'm sure Joe would understand.

Well, I've been really busy at my job the last couple weeks and been working a lot of hours. I haven't been able to get out to the workshop much this week, but I do have some stuff that needs a little finishing yet and I'll get them posted soon. Till then, have a good night and talk to you soon!

WICCA ART

Hello everyone, hope your week is going well so far for you. Here is a project I did for an artist friend of mine. The circle and moons are made of a piece of popular that I happened upon at Home depot. It has a purple hue in the grain and turns to a greenish color. I liked the grain so much I just put a couple of coats of urethane on it. I cut the star with a scroll saw and hand carved to make it look like a celtic knot. I contoured the moons on a sander as I would do for intarsia. I would like to do some celtic knot work for the scroll saw. I do have a few patterns to chose from, I just need the time to do it.

BIRD CAGE STAND

Hello all,
Well, it's been a busy week and I finally got my big project done. These pictures are taken as it's being painted. As soon as the project is completely finished with bird cage installed, I'll take more pictures. The customer was very pleased with the scrolled parakeet I did for the door. I think it makes it unique for the project. I don't normally take on projects like this, but it's for a good friend and I couldn't say no.

I have started a couple little projects and hope to have them done soon for posting. I'm trying my hand at building a custom frame for one of my new scroll projects, so hang in there for that one.

Hello everyone,
Hope your having a good day so far. I was surfing the net last night and found an interesting program for scollers. It's called coyote stencil, and it seems to be very nice for a $90.00 program. It says you can take a digital picture and make it a fret pattern. Also you can make it a intarsia pattern. Check this link out if your interested and if there is anyone reading today that has this program, could you give the rest of us some input on it.

FRET WORK

Hello everyone,
I finally was able to finish up a couple projects today. I tried my hand at some fret work albeit easy ones. I think it went pretty well and I used some different wood than you would normally would. The Phoenix was made out of a piece of scrap maple that had some unusual grain pattern. Then I thought that it looked good with a red back ground.

The other is a tribal scorpion that was cut out of Paduk. This wood was a little different to cut. When I was done cutting , it was like I ate a whole bag of Cheese puffs. The saw dust was a fine, orange looking. I used a backer that was a naturally dark wood. I'm not too sure what it was, but it was very nice to cut. I used tung oil to finish the maple, paduk and the other dark wood to give it a natural look. The grain on the paduk is beautiful and I'm not too sure if the picture gives it any justice.

Happy belated 4th

Hello everyone,
Hope everybody had a nice and safe 4th of July. I just got back from vacationing in northern Michigan for the last 4 days. All I did was relax and take in the peace and quite. I didn't get a chance to do any scrolling or any kind of woodworking so I'm itching to get back at it tomorrow. I have a few items I need to finish so I can post them on the blog for all to see. Well it's great to be back and hope to have some finished projects up on the board in the next couple days.

ROSE IN THE BEGINING STAGE

Hello everyone
I thought I let you see one of my projects in the beginning stages. I cut the pieces for this rose out of a unique piece of popular I found while walking through Home Depot. The wood has a purple color which I thought was weird for this piece. I'm getting ready to start fitting the pieces tighter and then I will begin to start shaping them to give it a 3-d type appearance. Hopefully I can get it done soon so you can see the finish project.

This pattern is taken from Garnet Hall's first book. It's the best rose pattern I have seen so far. Nice work Mr. Hall!!!

SHAMROCK

This intarsia is a proto-type I did of a shamrock. Didn't come out to bad. It's pretty basic but I have a few people who are intrested in it though. What do you think?
